68Bride's Dowry
Chinese Traditional Wedding comes with a lot of customs and rituals from China. Until now especially in Malaysia, those who have migrated here also brought some of the customs and rituals and practicing it until today. Of course it has been changing through out so many years unitl now. Bride's Dowry is one of the customs and rituals that Chinese in Malaysia are still practicing unitl now. The dowry is actually the bride's side need to prepare all the necessary items to bring over to the groom's house once they got married.
As in general, the Bride Dowry consist of the followings over here in Malaysia.
1. Basin,mug,spittoon,round tray and. All this will have to be in red in colours and usually have the wording of "double happiness" and with pictures or stickers of the dragon and phoenix stick to every single items mentioned above. It comes in set nowadays.
2. A baby bath-tub. Also have to be red in colour and with the wording of double happiness and the dragon and phoenix stickers stick on it. This bath-tub is actually meant for the descendant that are going to come to use.
3. Red Clogs- two pairs - means for the couples to wear it inside the new house togehter until ripe old age.
4. Pair of Charcoals. - For bringing good lucks to the husband and for the kids.
5. 8 boys needles cushion- The luck for getting lot of kids especially boys.
6. Red Umbrella- For the elderly or the parents to use when the groom come to fetch the bride over to his home on the big wedding day.
7. Chinese paper fan - a pair needed. The first one for the bride to take on the hand when the groom fetch her. When she got inside the car then, we will have to give back the first fan back to her parents and use the second one on the way to her new home. This is for the bride to bring good luck and wealth to the groom's house and when exchange another one is to prevent bringing all the lucks over. She should reserve some back for her parents side.
8. Red Scarf- The Bride should be using it during the wedding day as back in the old days this scarf shows that she has preserved her virginity.
9. Tea Set- Chinese wedding tea sets. For the bride and the groom to use it when they need to serve tea for the groom's parents and elderly when reaching their new home.
10. Two bottles of honey- In the old days, people use to carry sugar canes in the car also when the groom comes to fetch the bride. Now, the two bottles of honeys are for the replacement for it.
As per the above explained the Bride's Dowry generally practiced in Malaysia. The accessories wise as mentioned before still depends on the couples elderly or parents which to buy or not and the rules to be applied the same or not.
